A cervical smear test, also known as cervical cytology test, is a diagnostic method used for the prevention and detection of pre-cancerous conditions and cervical cancer. It is also performed to monitor the progress of conservative and surgical treatments for cervical erosion. The test can also identify infections with the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is linked to the development of cancer.

The procedure involves inserting a speculum into the vagina and collecting a sample of secretions containing cells from the mucous membrane of the cervix using a special brush with flexible fibres. The test is carried out on a gynaecological chair by a gynaecologist or midwife. It is completely painless, and takes only a few minutes.

  • The test is usually performed mid-cycle, ideally between days 10 and 20 of the menstrual cycle.
  • Avoid vaginal medications, creams, and douching for at least 48 hours before the test.
  • Refrain from sexual intercourse for 24–48 hours before the test.
