Breast Care

Breast Care

Breast health requires careful attention at every stage of life. Our Breast Care service provides comprehensive diagnostics and treatment for benign breast conditions and breast cancer. We work with trusted hospitals and clinics offering advanced imaging, minimally invasive biopsies, and modern surgical options- helping to ensure early detection, personalised care, and the best possible chance of recovery.

Our partner centres specialise in benign breast conditions such as cysts, fibroadenomas and adenomas, as well as malignant breast tumours. We provide access to breast ultrasound, mammography and minimally invasive biopsies, including vacuum-assisted biopsy, which allows tissue collection with minimal discomfort.

Breast Diagnostic Services

We provide swift access to state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to ensure accurate and timely results.

Breast Ultrasound

First-line imaging for breast pain, palpable lumps, cysts or dense tissue. Especially useful in younger women and as a complement to mammography.

Mammography

Highly sensitive imaging used to detect very small lesions. Recommended as both a screening and diagnostic tool, particularly in women over 40.

Vacuum-Assisted Biopsy

Minimally invasive and low-pain biopsy performed under imaging guidance. Allows precise sampling of suspicious lesions with minimal damage to surrounding tissue.

Core Needle Biopsy

Tissue sampling used to confirm or exclude breast cancer. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry help guide a personalised treatment plan.

Breast Treatment Options

Surgical Options

  • Breast-Conserving Surgery (tumour removal with healthy margin)
  • Mastectomy (complete breast removal for advanced cases)
  • Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (targeted lymph node check)
  • Breast Reconstruction (immediate or delayed)
  • Prophylactic Mastectomy (for high-risk BRCA-positive women)

Systemic Options

  • Chemotherapy (often administered neoadjuvant or adjuvant)
  • Hormone Therapy (for hormone-sensitive tumours)
  • Immunotherapy
  • Targeted Molecular Therapy (oral or intravenous)
  • Radiotherapy (often follows local surgery to reduce recurrence)

Breast Cancer in the UK: Key Facts

Breast cancer is a significant health challenge in the UK and worldwide. Early screening saves lives.

Breast Cancer in Numbers

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women worldwide. Each year, approximately 12% of women are affected, with around 1.7 million new cases and more than 500,000 deaths. In the UK, breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women, with tens of thousands of new diagnoses every year. These figures highlight the critical importance of regular screening, early detection, and ongoing breast health awareness.

Breast Cancer Risk Factors

The risk of developing breast cancer is influenced by genetic, hormonal and lifestyle factors.

Genetic Factors

  • Close family history of breast or ovarian cancer (mother, sister).
  • Presence of BRCA1 or BRCA2 Mutations (significantly increase lifetime risk).
  • Action: Genetic testing is strongly recommended if a strong family history exists.

Lifestyle & Other Factors

  • Age (being over 50)
  • Obesity (especially post-menopausal)
  • Early first period (before 12) or late menopause (after 55)
  • Prolonged use of the Oral Contraceptive Pill or HRT
  • Previous benign proliferative changes or prior radiotherapy

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Early-stage breast cancer may not cause any symptoms and is often only identified on mammography or ultrasound. Possible warning signs include:

  • A painless, hard lump in the breast
  • Changes in breast shape or size
  • Skin dimpling or thickening (peau d’orange)
  • Nipple inversion or change in position
  • Bloody or brownish nipple discharge
  • Redness or increased warmth of the breast
  • Noticeable asymmetry between breasts
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in the armpit

Any new or unusual change should be discussed with a breast specialist as soon as possible.

How Breast Cancer Is Diagnosed

Diagnosis usually follows a structured pathway combining clinical examination, imaging and biopsy:

Clinical examination

Breast and armpit palpation by an experienced clinician to detect lumps or enlarged lymph nodes.

Mammography & ultrasound

Imaging to identify suspicious lesions and characterise their size, shape and structure.

MRI (selected cases)

Used when additional detail is needed, particularly in dense breasts or complex cases.

Biopsy

Vacuum-assisted or core needle biopsy to obtain tissue for histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis.

Breast Cancer – Preventive Screening

The chances of successful treatment are greatest when breast cancer is diagnosed early. Preventive screening includes:

  • Monthly breast self-examination
  • Regular clinical breast examinations
  • Mammography at recommended intervals
  • Additional ultrasound or MRI in women at higher risk

During self-examination, women should look for changes in shape, size, skin texture, nipple appearance, discharge, or new lumps. Any concerning change should be discussed with a doctor without delay.
