What are the menisci and what do they do?

The menisci are two crescent-shaped pads of cartilage located between the femur (thigh bone) and the tibia (shin bone). How is a meniscal injury diagnosed?

Diagnosis is based on a detailed medical history, physical examination and imaging tests:

  • Clinical examination – assessment of joint line tenderness, range of motion, stability and specific meniscus tests.
  • Ultrasound and MRI – used to visualise the menisci and other soft tissue structures. MRI is considered the gold standard for assessing meniscal damage.
  • X-rays – usually taken in two projections to exclude fractures and to look for late consequences of injury such as arthritis.

What does arthroscopic meniscus repair involve?

Arthroscopic meniscus repair is a minimally invasive procedure performed in an operating theatre under regional, local or short general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes a few small incisions around the knee and inserts a thin camera (arthroscope) and specialised instruments.
